Knowing when divorce is the right decision

Couples who are having serious trouble with their marriage are sometimes able to work things out through counseling. Misunderstandings and confusion can take hold of a relationship in unexpected ways, and sometimes a counselor is able to help spouses carefully and calmly identify their differences and resolve them.

However, some situations are serious enough that counseling is not likely to result in conflict resolution, and divorce may be the right decision for all parties involved.

Divorce happens for a variety of reasons. Infidelity, domestic abuse and broken trust can all lead to divorce if issues are not resolved independently or in counseling. In other cases, couples find that the basis of their relationship has changed or isn't what they thought it was, and sadly sometimes this separation between spouses cannot be bridged.

If you believe your marriage can be repaired, then it is probably a good idea to seek professional help before deciding to divorce. However, if you and your child are put at risk by the behavior of your spouse or partner, then the right decision is to get out of the dangerous situation and into a safe one as soon as possible. We discussed these issues in one of our previous posts, "Taking legal steps to protect against domestic violence."

In any case, if you have questions about divorce or family law in Florida, then a knowledgeable and compassionate attorney can answer your questions. If you choose to divorce, then an attorney can also ensure that your rights are protected throughout the process and help you develop a post-divorce plan, including matters related to parenting.
