How should I spend time with my child on visitation days?

Depending on how your family was organized while you were married, you may or may not know how best to spend time with your children during visitation days. For example, let's say you have your child for every other weekend. You've cleared your schedule so that you can spend every second together on these days, but what should you and your son or daughter do to pass the time?

Before answering this question, the first order of business is for newly single parents to understand that it's not their responsibility to make every weekend an incredibly spectacular, fun-filled adventure. The most important thing is that you have reserved the time and you'll be devoting your weekend to your child. Just getting a chance to spend time with mom and dad, in the world of a child, is always enough.

Keeping that in mind, let's look at a few ways you might want to spend time together:

  • Playing games: A simple game of cards, checkers, Scrabble or Monopoly is always going to be an excellent way to pass the time with your children.
  • Doing chores: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? Well, the same goes for all play and no work. Doing chores together with your child can be a meaningful and fun learning experience.
  • Get artistic and creative: You can make crafts, paint pictures, cook together and do any number of creative activities that you and your child will enjoy.
  • Go out walking: If you think you'll enjoy a walk in nature, go to a nature reserve with your child and take a hike together.
  • Let your child decide: Kids will often have a lot of fun ideas about what they want to do. If it's safe, affordable and fun, why not go along with it?

These are just a few ideas, but if you do a little bit of brainstorming with your child, you're sure to come with countless ways to spend your days together. Remember, the most important thing is that you have the chance to spend the time, and not what you actually do, together. As such, if you are currently struggling to secure child visitation rights -- be sure to devote your time and attention toward achieving this goal.
