Television personality and DJ Pauly D has recently begun to seek custody of his five-month-old daughter. The reality television star had the baby with a woman he spent only a brief amount of time with and the state of their relationship now has caused him to be unable to meet his daughter. He says the custody filing is the first step in the process of finding a way to spend time with his baby and working out a long term parenting and support plan.
Particularly for couples who have not had a serious relationship prior to the birth of their child, working out the details of a custody arrangement and creating a co-parenting plan can be difficult since the two parents might not have the same ideas about how to raise the child and what the best course of action is.
In this case Pauly D has expressed some concerns about the mother’s parenting abilities, although this is her second child and there are no allegations that she is an unfit parent in that case. Still, concerns about the mother’s views on child support were raised when she posted a provocative photo on a social networking site displaying the infant playing with a pile of one hundred dollar bills. This serves as an important reminder that child support is intended only to provide for the needs of the child and not to act as an income source for the parent who is requesting the support. The appropriate amount of child support will always depend on the specific case, taking into account factors like the lifestyle of the child, the amount of time the child spends with each parent, and any special needs that the child has.
