Reasons why you may need to change your visitation date or time

If you have visitation rights with your children, you know how important it is to make the most of every minute you spend together. However, there could come a point when you realize that you need to change your visitation date or time.

Should you find yourself in this position, the first thing you should do is reach out to your ex-spouse. You can't make any changes until they first agree to them.

Here are some of the reasons why you may need to request a change to your visitation date and/or time:

  • Work function: For example, if you're out of town for business, you may not be able to visit with your children as outlined by your schedule.
  • Personal life: There are a lot of things that fall under this category. Maybe you're having work done on your home and you need to meet with your contractor. Or maybe you're struggling with your mental health and need some time to recover.
  • Sickness: If you're sick, it's best to stay away from your children, especially if you're contagious. Don't attempt to fight through it, as you're not likely to enjoy your time with your children.

During the divorce process, you'll create a parenting plan and visitation schedule with your ex. When doing so, it's important to fight for your rights, as it'll dictate how you spend time with your children in the future.

If you need to make a one-time change to your visitation schedule, talk to your ex about this. Should you need a permanent change, you'll have to seek a modification through the court system.
