Child custody and your parenting plan: Prepare for the future

If you have children with your soon to be ex-spouse, the divorce process will focus heavily on topics such as child custody, visitation rights and child support.

While you want nothing more than to put this chapter of your life in the past, the decisions you make during your divorce will prepare you for the future. And that's why you need to proceed with caution.

Your parenting plan is designed to address a variety of child custody related details that will impact the way you raise your children in the future. It can touch on things such as:

  • Where your children will live (this is known as physical custody)
  • If you and/or your ex-spouse will have legal custody
  • A visitation schedule for the non-custodial parent
  • How to manage visits with extended family members post-divorce

No two parenting plans are the same, but there are details that you must include in order to provide guidance and organization in the future.

Since you realize that disagreements may occur in the future, you can also include language in your parenting plan about how to work through these situations. It's nice to have a plan in place, so you always know what to do should you not see eye to eye.

Don't take the creation of your parenting plan lightly. The terms and conditions included within it will govern the way you spend time with and raise your children in the future.

If you have reason to believe that a parenting plan modification is necessary, such as if your ex continually violates what's in place, you can request this through the court system.
