On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2021 | Family Law/Divorce Issues

Deciding to end a marriage is a difficult choice, especially if children are involved. Just like deciding to get married should not be taken lightly, neither should deciding to dissolve a marriage.

If you’re contemplating divorce but can’t bring yourself to take that step just yet, there may be alternatives to explore.

What are some common alternatives to divorce?

Below are three techniques that couples could try before making the decision to divorce:

  • Joint therapy: Couple’s therapy can be very beneficial and cathartic when approached with an open heart and mind. Working through issues individually and together can heal a marriage.
  • Trial separations: Florida does not offer legal separation, but this does not stop couples from having a trial separation on their own. Being separated still affords couples to have all the benefits of marriage while living apart. Sometimes trial separation gives perspective and clarity on the future of the relationship.
  • Postnuptial agreements: A postnuptial agreement is similar to a prenuptial agreement. Sometimes, will sign a postnuptial agreement after an incident in their marriage makes them consider divorce. The agreement spells out what will happen in regards to the marital property and support if a divorce does eventually happen. The security of that agreement can often ease tensions so a couple can focus on their marriage.

Taking the time to explore all the possible options can give you an additional measure of comfort if you do eventually divorce. You’ll know that you truly tried everything to make your marriage work.

If you have exhausted all the options and are still determined to get a divorce, having an advocate that is experienced in divorces in Florida can help to ensure that your rights are protected.
