3 Big Concerns Your Kids May Have About Visitation

If your ex-spouse has visitation rights, it’s important that you get on the same page. Co-parenting is never easy, but it comes with the territory upon divorcing.

In addition to your personal concerns, your children may be unsure about the visitation process, what to expect and how they’ll like it.

Here are some of the most common concerns:

  • Being away from you: Your children are used to living with you, so they may have concerns about spending time apart. This is particularly true if they’ll be staying overnight with your ex-spouse. You can help ease their concerns by sitting down with them, and the other parent, to talk things out.
  • Boredom: Your children are comfortable with your home, so they know how to keep themselves occupied. But when they visit with your ex, they have concerns about boredom. Talk to your ex about this, as you may be able to lend advice about what types of things your children like to do.
  • Inability to communicate with you: You don’t want to get in the way when your ex is visiting with your children, but it’s important that they still have the opportunity to communicate with you, when necessary. There are many ways of doing so, such as text messaging and phone calls.

When it comes to child custody and visitation, you, your ex, and your children will all have concerns.

Your children are already going through a lot of changes, so do your part in taking as much stress out of the visitation process as possible. This will make things better for all parties involved.
